ECW Orientated Interview with CW Anderson
No problem, glad to be able to do this.
First of all How did you end up in ECW, did Paul Heyman make the call, or was it something to do with Nova I think I read?
I walked right off the street and got my job. Went with a friend of mine that had a tryout and was standing by the ring when Nova wanted to see what I could do. Got in the ring and did a mini match with Simon Diamond and Paul liked what he saw. Offered me a job that night.
Did you have any tryout matches?
Just that mini match
Originally how long were you scheduled to work or was it on the spot shows?
Pretty much show up at every show and hopefully I would get a chance to work. Would work out in the ring before the show and was wanting to get a spot.
You debuted in ECW on June 6, 1999, teaming Skull Von Krush against
Danny Doring and Roadkill. What are some of your memories of that
match and the ECW crowd, did they give you a hard time or did they
already know you from the INDY's?
I remember Skull being a real dick to me. That continued for many months I was there. That's just his nature. Paul made Danny and Roadkill put 3 finishes on me to pin me. While I was in the ring before the match started it all seemed surreal. That whole night was kind of a blur because I was so jacked on adrenaline.
What was your view on ECW before working there and how did it change. If it did?
Thought it was a bunch of guys doing drugs, drinking and beating the crap out of new guys. Was scared to death of the real hardcore guys cause they looked like they were killing each other. Once I got there it was totally different. Was a real family atmosphere with the exception of a few people. There was drinking but that was just Sandman. After a while, I looked forward to going to see my 2nd family as I called them.
How did the guys treat you in the begining and did you know any of
them from eleswhere?
They all welcomed me and were willing to help me get better. No one really offered to take me in, it was kinda get to the show how ever you can and find a room if you can. Don't care if you sleep in your vehicle but just get to the show. I knew Steve Corino for many years and Simon Diamond.
You began using the the name The Enforcer or ECW Anderson while in
ECW. Who came up with that?
That was Paul and Tommy's idea since we were gonna mimick Paul's Dangerous Alliance.
Besides the legendry Tommy Dreamer match what were some of your
favorite or most memorable matches whilst in ECW?
My feud with Super Crazy, Kid Kash and my matches with Danny and Roadkill while I was in the Dangerous Alliance.
How did you joining Lou E. Dangerously and the New Dangerous Alliance
come about? what was it like being in a stable?
That was Lou's idea. Once the Dudley's left, he was asked who he wanted to manage and he said me. We traveled together and he loved my work. We were really close and he thought we could do some great things together and he was right. Bill and I were already a tag team so him copying Paul, the whole Alliance thing seemed the right thing to do.
Was it the first stable you have been in?
Yes.
After quite a few upper carded talent left for the WWF it was time
for CW to step up and fill the role. You'd made quite an impact
already and the fans definetley admired your work. Did you feel ready?
Yes, when I first got their Paul put me against Jerry Lynn to see if I was ready and I wasn't. After a few months, my work got better and I was. The night Lance Storm left, Paul said it was time to take CW to the next level.
To the infamous I quit match against Tommy Dreamer, can you spell
match of the year!!! How did you prepare for such a brutal match since its not your forte?
was it time for CW to go Extreme?
Well, first off thank you on that. That's the match it seems I'm most known for and people say that match and Magnum/Tully's is the 2 best there is which is a huge compliment. That match was Tommy's idea. He thought we could tear the house down with an "I Quit" match. I had ideas the whole week and was willing to sacrifice my body for ECW and those fans. I had done a lot of extreme stuff with Balls and Axl so I was ready for it. I just wanted to prove some of the boys wrong that said it was gonna be a lil difficult to do one of those type matches and to prove to myself that I had been ready to be the next big thing at ECW.
I heard there was a funny or lets say painful rib to do with barbed
wire prior the match. Tell us about it.
The finish was suppose to be the barb wire to the face instead of that thing that goes around that table. So on the drive up to NY Tommy calls me and says he can't find any barb wire, that someone had taken it out the truck. So we get to the building and myself, Lou E and Chilly Willy start walking round town to find some barb wire. We end up finding some on someones fence and tell one of the ring guys to go and get it. Show starts and he get's back with it. Well, he went to the wrong place and gets freaking razor wire instead. I tell Tommy there is no way he is wrapping that round my face. So he flattens it out and says that I can spinebust him on it.
How did you perseve Paul Heyman, did he always treat you well?
Yes, Paul treated me great. He knew I was a good hand to ECW and knew when he gave me the ball each night, I wouldn't fumble it. Paul always gave me some great lines for promos which included the one from "A League of their own" where I scream at Dawn Marie and make her cry. Then I proceed to tell her "Are you crying?, there's no crying, there's no crying in ECW, you don't cry in ECW!!"
Any unpayed checks?
MANY!!!
Did you ever speak to Paul during the last few months, I know a lot of wrestlers
say he was very in-accessable
The night I did that crying promo was after my match with Tommy at Massacre on 34th street. He told me after Jan. I was gonna be his next TV champ and he was gonna put me on contract. He wanted to make sure I wasn't gonna leave him and go to WCW or WWF. I told him I loved it here and would never be unfaithful to ECW
I know ECW folded almost over night as Paul jumped ship so's to speak
but was there any inkling that you saw, of it going down? was it a
sinking ship?
Well, with the unpaid checks and the rumors of it going down kinda hard not to. But I was a company man and tried to have a positive attitude. I was like "This is ECW, there is no way it's gonna fold" Boy was I wrong.
What are some of your memories of ECW's last show? who did you
wrestle? and what was the general feeling backstage?
Being in the ring with Lou E and having a hardcore match with Jack V. We all got in the ring after the show and drank a beer for the fans. We were all crying backstage cause everyone knew this was it.
How did it feel seeing Heyman on Raw after being so loyal?
Like seeing your wife in the arms of another man.
Have you ever spoken since?
I see him when I go to Raw and Smackdown tapings and tryout matches.
Where did you see yourself going after ECW?
I had no idea. Didn't really think about it.
I'm sure you were as excited as I was when you heard about the
Hardcore Homecoming and One Night Stand events, before it all went
ahead did you think WWE could do it justice?
I was excited. I didn't think WWE would let it be successful since it wasn't really their product. I figured they would have their hands more in it than what they let on.
Were you more supportive of Shane Douglas' show or WWE's?
Shane's cause it was all ECW but didn't know the bookers and agents from TNA were gonna be there and be involved like they were.
You and Simon Diamond faced Chris Chetti and Mikey Whipwreck at
Hardcore Homecoming. What was it like to be back in front of those
hardcore fans and was it the same buzz as before?
The buzz was louder. Also the greatest high I ever had. When I came out and my fans started chanting my name. Felt great to be involved with that product.
What was your thoughts of the show, did it do ECW proud?
Yes, and then some.
I heard there may be more shows in the future, maybe an overseas type
tour, have you heard this, can you enlighten us?
I've heard there may be more shows but I didn't hear of overseas. I figure it would be in ECW's ol stomping grounds.
would you like to tour or do you think one night is the respectful thing to do?
I would like to tour. The fans need more of the ECW and harcdore product.
You said on INDY Xtra our partner radio show that you werent gonna call WWE
but if they wanted you, you'd go. I guess they ended up calling you?
Dreamer gave me the chance to go and show them what I had and I have. I figure in my career that I didn't have to go and keep calling someone to get a job. Tommy knows I would be an assest to the WWE product.
From what I saw you were only part of the audience on One Night Stand, was that
disapointing since you gave so much near the end of ECW?
Very disappointing. I had a tag match on the PPV and they scrapped it for time. I would have rather worked that night than sit ring side.
How do you think the show went, many claim the matches were too short,
myself I thought they were, but it was very suprising how authentic it all seemed?
I thought it was ok. Could have been a lot better. Some matches weren't as great as I had hoped and some things were cluttered. They had so many guys there and tried to get em all on TV.
Do you feel having the WWE invaders was positive or negative for the show?
They could have done a few more matches if they hadn't been there but figured they were planning for something long term with them being there.
I'm sure you heard about the JBL and Blue Meanie incident. How do you
feel about JBL's actions, can you shed anymore light on the situation?
I had no idea that it was going on in the ring but from what I heard, was very unprofessional from Meanie and JBL.
How were you and the other stars treated backstage? Was Paul there to
support you?
We were treated great. I mean it was an ECW show so I felt we were home in some ways. Paul treated me great.
well I thank you for answering all these questions, we'd just like to
play a little word asociation, just make a short comment on the
following: > Simon Diamond - a great tag partner to me and someone I have great chemistry with > New Jack - out of his mind > Razor Wire - leave it for the convicts > Paul Heyman as from today - Hope he gets his hand back in wrestling like it needs to be > Tommy Dreamer - great friend and hope to work him in the next ECW show (if there is one) > Kid Kash - helluva talent and someone I always can tear the house down with > ECW Arena - gone > Hat Guy ( we wan't him for an interview!) - Great guy and was great to see him at the show
